About this page

What this page tells you. The panchang is the Hindu almanac for one day and one place: the tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (the Moon’s star), yoga, karana and weekday, together with sunrise and sunset.

How to read it. Check the five parts at the top first, then the timings. Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda are periods the tradition avoids for starting new things; Abhijit is generally treated as the favourable midday window. Choghadiya splits the day into eight parts, each named good, neutral or poor.

Good to know: Times are worked out for the place you choose and change with it. Customs differ by region and family. If a ritual matters to you, confirm the timing with your priest or family tradition.

Moonset

21:36

Moonrise and moonset are for the calendar day (midnight to midnight) at this place. The Moon comes up about 50 minutes later each day, so on some dates it does not rise, or does not set, within that day. A dash then means the event falls on the neighbouring day.

PeriodFrom To What the texts say
Sunrise07:11 —
Sunset17:55 —
Rahu kaal 16:35 17:55 An inauspicious period of about 90 minutes, its position set by the weekday. The texts advise against starting anything new in it.
Gulika 15:14 16:35 Saturn's sub-period; avoided for the same reasons as Rahu kaal, and regarded as more persistent in effect.
Yamaganda 12:33 13:54 A third inauspicious window, again fixed by weekday.
Abhijit 12:12 12:55 The eighth muhurta of the day, straddling local noon. Classically the most auspicious window of the day and the standard fallback when no other muhurta is available - except on Wednesdays.
Brahma muhurta 05:25 06:18 Before dawn: traditionally the hour for waking, prayer, meditation and study.
Pratah sandhya 05:51 07:11 The dawn sandhya, ending at sunrise: the time for the morning prayers.
Vijaya muhurta 14:21 15:04 Favoured for setting out on journeys and for work where success is wanted.
Godhuli muhurta 17:55 18:22 Cow-dust hour at sunset: favoured for weddings in many regions.
Sayahna sandhya 17:55 19:15 The dusk sandhya, from sunset: the time for the evening prayers.
Nishita muhurta 00:07 01:00
14 Dec 2026
The midnight muhurta, counterpart of Abhijit: kept for Shiva and Kali worship, as on Shivaratri.
Dur muhurta 16:29 17:12 Avoided for auspicious beginnings.
Amrit kalam 21:30 23:18 About an hour and a half fixed by the Moon's nakshatra, not the Sun: favoured for starting good work, and in the south it outweighs a weak hour of the day.
Varjyam 10:42 12:30 About an hour and a half fixed by the Moon's nakshatra, also called tyajyam: new undertakings are avoided in it. Much observed in the south, alongside Rahu kalam.

The Shaka year changes at Chaitra shukla pratipada and the Gujarati year at Kartika shukla pratipada, the day after Diwali. The two ritus differ because one follows the lunar month and the other the Sun's actual season.

Yogas and windows of the day
PeriodFrom ToWhat the texts say
Ravi yogaNot todayWhen the Moon's nakshatra is the 4th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 13th or 20th from the Sun's: held to cancel many faults of the day, so it is sought for starting work.
Bhadra 07:11 16:48 The Vishti karana. Auspicious work is avoided in it, most of all while Bhadra is said to stay on earth; in the heavens or the underworld it is held harmless here.
in the underworld
Ganda moolaNot todayThe Moon in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula or Revati, the nakshatras at the joins of water and fire signs. A birth in it is traditionally followed by a shanti.
PanchakaNot todayThe Moon in Kumbha or Meena, from the second half of Dhanishtha to the end of Revati. Southward travel, roofing and gathering firewood are traditionally put off.
Baana: Roga (illness)07:1111:37 Set by the Sun's degree within its sign, so each lasts about a day. Muhurta texts avoid Roga for medicine, Agni for building, Raja for dealings with authority, Chora for travel and Mrityu for weddings.

Chandrabalam and Tarabalam

For your OWN birth rashi or nakshatra: the day favours you when it is listed. The Moon's sign is counted from your rashi (1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th are good) and its nakshatra from yours in groups of nine (Sampat, Kshema, Sadhana, Mitra, Parama mitra are good).

The sidereal sign rising in the east through the day, from the one rising at sunrise. Panchaka rahita cuts the day wherever the lagna, tithi or nakshatra changes and adds the four (with the weekday): remainders 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mark the five panchakas, any other is free of them.

Choghadiya

The night sequence starts at a different point in the cycle from the day one, which is why the two are tabulated separately rather than one being derived from the other.

Gowri panchangam

The Tamil reckoning divides the same eight parts of the day and names them differently. It is a separate table, not a translation - the two disagree about which part of the day is favourable.

Hora

Twenty-four horas from sunrise, in the Chaldean order. They are UNEQUAL - the twelve day horas divide daylight and the twelve night horas divide darkness - so a summer day hora runs longer than an hour and its night hora shorter. The first hora of any day belongs to that day's own lord, which is where the weekday names come from.
