The five parts of the day (panchang)
| Part | Value | Ends | What the old texts say |

21:10 | Tvashtar is the celestial architect. Read as design, brilliance and the making of beautiful and well-formed things. |
| Yoga | Harshana then Vajra |
21:39 | auspicious Counted among the favourable yogas in the muhurta literature. |
| Karana | Balava then Kaulava |
19:08 | One of the seven movable karanas, which repeat through the month. |
| Vara | Sunday | — | Ruled by the Sun. Favoured for matters of authority and health. |
These good and bad times come from the classical muhurat books, such as Muhurta Chintamani. They are traditional rules for choosing a time, not predictions.

The Shaka year starts on Chaitra shukla pratipada, and the Gujarati year on Kartika shukla pratipada, the day after Diwali. There are two ritus (seasons) because one follows the lunar month and the other the Sun's real season.
| Period | From | To | What the old texts say |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ravi yoga | Not today | When the Moon's nakshatra is the 4th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 13th or 20th from the Sun's: held to cancel many faults of the day, so it is sought for starting work. | |
| Bhadra | Not today | The Vishti karana. Auspicious work is avoided in it, most of all while Bhadra is said to stay on earth; in the heavens or the underworld it is held harmless here. | |
| Ganda moola | Not today | The Moon in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula or Revati, the nakshatras at the joins of water and fire signs. A birth in it is traditionally followed by a shanti. | |
| Panchaka | Not today | The Moon in Kumbha or Meena, from the second half of Dhanishtha to the end of Revati. Southward travel, roofing and gathering firewood are traditionally put off. | |
| Baana: Agni (fire) | 05:57 | 03:21 14 Apr 2025 |
Set by the Sun's degree within its sign, so each lasts about a day. Muhurta texts avoid Roga for medicine, Agni for building, Raja for dealings with authority, Chora for travel and Mrityu for weddings. |

Chandrabalam counts the Moon's sign from yours (1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are good); Tarabalam counts the Moon's star from yours in groups of nine.

The sign rising in the east changes through the day, starting with the one rising at sunrise. Panchaka rahita divides the day wherever the rising sign, the tithi or the nakshatra changes, and marks each part as free of panchaka (good) or not.
Hora (planetary hours)
The day and the night are each split into twelve horas, starting at sunrise, and each hora is ruled by a planet. Day horas share out the daylight and night horas the darkness, so in summer a day hora is longer than an hour. The first hora of each day belongs to that day's planet, which is where the weekday names come from.
