In simple words

What this page tells you. The panchang is the Hindu almanac for one day and one place: the tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (the Moon’s star), yoga, karana and weekday, together with sunrise and sunset.

How to read it. Check the five parts at the top first, then the timings. Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda are periods the tradition avoids for starting new things; Abhijit is generally treated as the favourable midday window. Choghadiya splits the day into eight parts, each named good, neutral or poor.

Good to know: Times are worked out for the place you choose and change with it. Customs differ by region and family. If a ritual matters to you, confirm the timing with your priest or family tradition.

Sunrise

06:05

Sunset

17:45

Moonrise

05:34

Moonset

17:22

Moonrise and moonset are for the calendar day (midnight to midnight) at this place. The Moon comes up about 50 minutes later each day, so on some dates it does not rise, or does not set, within that day. A dash then means the event falls on the neighbouring day.

The five limbs

Each limb ends at the instant shown.
LimbValue Ends What the texts say
TithiAmavasya 21:20 Purna (full)
Read as completion and fullness; favoured for marriage and travel.
NakshatraHasta 21:40 The hand: skill, craft and the making of things. Tradition connects it with dexterity, with healing touch, and with obtaining what one reaches for.
YogaIndra 21:58 auspicious
Counted among the favourable yogas in the muhurta literature.
KaranaChatushpada 09:24 Chatushpada is one of the four fixed karanas, each of which occurs once per lunar month.
VaraSaturday — Ruled by Saturn. Associated with labour, iron and long undertakings.

Muhurta classifications from the classical muhurta literature (Muhurta Chintamani and the Panchang tradition). These are selection rules, not predictions.

Day periods

Sun and muhurtas

PeriodFrom To What the texts say
Sunrise06:05 —
Sunset17:45 —
Rahu kaal 09:00 10:27 An inauspicious period of about 90 minutes, its position set by the weekday. The texts advise against starting anything new in it.
Gulika 06:05 07:32 Saturn's sub-period; avoided for the same reasons as Rahu kaal, and regarded as more persistent in effect.
Yamaganda 13:23 14:50 A third inauspicious window, again fixed by weekday.
Abhijit 11:32 12:18 The eighth muhurta of the day, straddling local noon. Classically the most auspicious window of the day and the standard fallback when no other muhurta is available - except on Wednesdays.

Sunrise is computed for the upper limb with atmospheric refraction — the Drik convention. Disc-centre would move every time on this page by two to four minutes, which is why the choice is stated rather than assumed.

Choghadiya

The night sequence starts at a different point in the cycle from the day one, which is why the two are tabulated separately rather than one being derived from the other.

Gowri panchangam

The Tamil reckoning divides the same eight parts of the day and names them differently. It is a separate table, not a translation - the two disagree about which part of the day is favourable.

Hora

Twenty-four horas from sunrise, in the Chaldean order. They are UNEQUAL - the twelve day horas divide daylight and the twelve night horas divide darkness - so a summer day hora runs longer than an hour and its night hora shorter. The first hora of any day belongs to that day's own lord, which is where the weekday names come from.
