About this page

What this page tells you. The panchang is the Hindu calendar for one day and one place. It gives the tithi (lunar date), the nakshatra (the Moon's star), the yoga, the karana and the weekday, with sunrise and sunset.

How to read it. Look at the five parts at the top first, then the timings. Rahu kaal and Yamaganda are times the tradition avoids for starting something new. Abhijit is usually taken as the good time around midday. Choghadiya splits the day into eight parts, each marked good, neutral or poor.

Good to know: Times are worked out for the place you choose and change with it. Customs differ by region and family. If a ritual matters to you, confirm the timing with your priest or family tradition.

Moonrise and moonset are for this calendar day, midnight to midnight, at this place. The Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day, so on some days it does not rise or set at all. A dash means it happens on the day before or after.

Yamaganda 12:36 14:12 Another time to avoid, also set by the weekday.
Abhijit 12:10 13:01 The time around local midday. The tradition sees it as the best time of the day, and the one to use when no other good time is free. Not used on Wednesdays.
Brahma muhurta 04:43 05:28 Before dawn: traditionally the hour for waking, prayer, meditation and study.
Pratah sandhya 05:05 06:12 The dawn sandhya, ending at sunrise: the time for the morning prayers.

Dur muhurta 17:17 18:08 Avoided for auspicious beginnings.
Amrit kalam 18:20 19:44 About an hour and a half fixed by the Moon's nakshatra, not the Sun: favoured for starting good work, and in the south it outweighs a weak hour of the day.
Varjyam 21:08 22:32 About an hour and a half fixed by the Moon's nakshatra, also called tyajyam: new undertakings are avoided in it. Much observed in the south, alongside Rahu kalam.

Set by the Sun's degree within its sign, so each lasts about a day. Muhurta texts avoid Roga for medicine, Agni for building, Raja for dealings with authority, Chora for travel and Mrityu for weddings.

Chandrabalam and Tarabalam

These help you check the day against YOUR OWN Moon sign (rashi) and birth star (nakshatra). If yours is in the list, the day is favourable for you. Chandrabalam counts the Moon's sign from yours (1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are good); Tarabalam counts the Moon's star from yours in groups of nine.

The sign rising in the east changes through the day, starting with the one rising at sunrise. Panchaka rahita divides the day wherever the rising sign, the tithi or the nakshatra changes, and marks each part as free of panchaka (good) or not.

Hora (planetary hours)

The day and the night are each split into twelve horas, starting at sunrise, and each hora is ruled by a planet. Day horas share out the daylight and night horas the darkness, so in summer a day hora is longer than an hour. The first hora of each day belongs to that day's planet, which is where the weekday names come from.
