About this page

What this page tells you. The panchang is the Hindu calendar for one day and one place. It gives the tithi (lunar date), the nakshatra (the Moon's star), the yoga, the karana and the weekday, with sunrise and sunset.

How to read it. Look at the five parts at the top first, then the timings. Rahu kaal and Yamaganda are times the tradition avoids for starting something new. Abhijit is usually taken as the good time around midday. Choghadiya splits the day into eight parts, each marked good, neutral or poor.

Good to know: Times are worked out for the place you choose and change with it. Customs differ by region and family. If a ritual matters to you, confirm the timing with your priest or family tradition.

Moonrise and moonset are for this calendar day, midnight to midnight, at this place. The Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day, so on some days it does not rise or set at all. A dash means it happens on the day before or after.

Each part lasts until the time shown.

Yamaganda 11:00 12:32 Another time to avoid, also set by the weekday.

Amrit kalam 19:09 20:53 About an hour and a half fixed by the Moon's nakshatra, not the Sun: favoured for starting good work, and in the south it outweighs a weak hour of the day.
Varjyam 08:42 10:27 About an hour and a half fixed by the Moon's nakshatra, also called tyajyam: new undertakings are avoided in it. Much observed in the south, alongside Rahu kalam.

The Shaka year starts on Chaitra shukla pratipada, and the Gujarati year on Kartika shukla pratipada, the day after Diwali. There are two ritus (seasons) because one follows the lunar month and the other the Sun's real season.

Special yogas and times of the day
PeriodFrom ToWhat the old texts say
Ravi yogaNot todayWhen the Moon's nakshatra is the 4th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 13th or 20th from the Sun's: held to cancel many faults of the day, so it is sought for starting work.
BhadraNot todayThe Vishti karana. Auspicious work is avoided in it, most of all while Bhadra is said to stay on earth; in the heavens or the underworld it is held harmless here.
Ganda moola Whole day The Moon in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula or Revati, the nakshatras at the joins of water and fire signs. A birth in it is traditionally followed by a shanti.
Panchaka 06:23 21:45 The Moon in Kumbha or Meena, from the second half of Dhanishtha to the end of Revati. Southward travel, roofing and gathering firewood are traditionally put off.
Baana: Raja (the state)15:2006:22

Set by the Sun's degree within its sign, so each lasts about a day. Muhurta texts avoid Roga for medicine, Agni for building, Raja for dealings with authority, Chora for travel and Mrityu for weddings.

Chandrabalam and Tarabalam

These help you check the day against YOUR OWN Moon sign (rashi) and birth star (nakshatra). If yours is in the list, the day is favourable for you. Chandrabalam counts the Moon's sign from yours (1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are good); Tarabalam counts the Moon's star from yours in groups of nine.

The sign rising in the east changes through the day, starting with the one rising at sunrise. Panchaka rahita divides the day wherever the rising sign, the tithi or the nakshatra changes, and marks each part as free of panchaka (good) or not.

Hora (planetary hours)

The day and the night are each split into twelve horas, starting at sunrise, and each hora is ruled by a planet. Day horas share out the daylight and night horas the darkness, so in summer a day hora is longer than an hour. The first hora of each day belongs to that day's planet, which is where the weekday names come from.
