About Holi / Dhulandi

Holi is a Hindu spring festival, often called the festival of colours. People throw coloured powder, called gulal, and coloured water at each other, and they also dance and eat sweets.

The day of colours is also called Rangwali Holi or Dhulandi.

According to Hindu legend, Holika, who could not be harmed by fire, sat in a fire with the boy Prahlad, a devotee of Vishnu, to kill him. Holika burned, but Prahlad survived.

The Holika Dahan bonfire, lit on the eve of Holi, recalls this story.

Another legend links the colours to Krishna, who is said to have playfully smeared colour on Radha's face.

In Barsana and Nandgaon, a custom called Lathmar Holi has women strike men with sticks while the men shield themselves.
