About Karva Chauth
Karva Chauth is a day-long fast kept by married Hindu women, mainly in northern India. Traditionally, they pray for their husbands' long life and good health.
Before sunrise, women eat a meal called sargi, often sent or made by the mother-in-law. Then they traditionally take no food or water until the Moon is seen at night.
Before the fast ends, women gather for prayers, and an older woman tells the story of Karva Chauth.
Karva means a clay pot with a spout, and such a pot is used in the rituals.
When the Moon rises, a woman often looks at it through a sieve, then at her husband. He gives her water or something sweet to end the fast.
One legend tells of Veeravati, the only sister of seven brothers, who tricked her into thinking the Moon had risen, so she broke her fast and her husband died. The story says that when she kept the fast again, he came back to life.
Dates and times are for Thāne, Maharashtra, India. Another town can differ by a day when a tithi changes close to sunrise. You can change the place above.
